Chiamato all'Opera di Parigi per dirigere Tannhäuser di Wagner, il direttore d'orchestra magiaro Zoltan Szanto (N. Arestrup) si trova alle prese con incomprensioni linguistiche, noie sindacali, nevrosi, gelosie, rivalità e ha una relazione con la primadonna (G. Close, doppiata nel canto dal soprano Kiri Te Kanawa). L'opera va in scena, ma a sipario abbassato, affidata soltanto alla musica e ai cantanti. Ambiziosa metafora sulla difficile convivenza tra i popoli europei dopo la caduta di muri, cortine di ferro, frontiere tra Est e Ovest, ha al suo attivo il colorito resoconto sull'allestimento di uno spettacolo lirico e i suoi retroscena, ma la parte centrale sulla passione extraconiugale, iniettata di succhi e veleni autobiografici da parte di Szabó, è imperdonabile. Prodotto da David Puttnam, contribuì al suo declino.
